A Word on the Name
Intended as an ironic name for someone who actually did do the reading, Skip the Reading exists because, after reading hundreds of books, remembering the various details from those books is nearly impossible. The options available for note taking based on books are similarly flawed: keep a handwritten journal, use a note-taking tool like Evernote, or forget the details forever. The handwritten journal fails at being quick-reference material or indexible. Evernote fails because the material is not published—to much effort for only the author’s eyes. Forgetting the details forever is simply not an option. So, Skip the Reading is born.
Let one idea be clear: the goal is not to skip the reading. The goal is to create notes that are so in-depth and useful that skipping the reading would be possible. We would never encourage someone to skip the reading, but if the reader finds themselves in a pinch, let Skip the Reading be of assistance. Otherwise, it’s just a reference material to back up the random thought.
The Books You’ll Find
There is no guarantee about the types of books you will find annotated here. You will find a motley crew of books being discussed. You will be less likely to find summaries of classic tales on the blog, for those books have been summarized and annotated by smarter people than the writer of this blog. Why reinvent the wheel, or why try to be Harold Bloom?
We focus on what is interesting to us. Particular books and genres:
Non-fiction business reads
More obscure fiction
